the strength of the wings determining how easy it is to get up off of the ground makes sense ...and not having used them means they're pretty weak right now, like when you first start a new type of exercise that relies on muscles that you aren't used to using

i only wish i'd actually figured all this out before the weather started to turn, now that it's getting colder, i expect we'll be in for heavier winds and rain soon. [ He pulls a face at the laptop. ] and snow.

Oh that genuinely IS the worst.
I regained my flying abilities around this time last year after not being able to for awhile and it SUCKED to get back to it when snow started coming down.

[ It sucked for a few reasons, actually! ]

The rain isn't good either but only sort of.
I really like the rain so I like flying in it, but you need to be just as careful about flying in the rain as walking in the rain.
Monsters can still catch colds.

Honestly maybe a tailored parka would make flying in difficult weather easier. I've got a good sense of it anyway.

hm... maybe, though i think it might be harder to get something tailored for both my wings and tail. and horns. also the spikes.

I know a few gargoyles who've gotten stuff tailored, though!! There's got to be something that would let you fly AND keep you safe from the elements.

i think as long as it isn't storming, then it could work

Uhhh NO, because a glider is what keeps you in the air, which is why it works to also protect you from the weather, ONLY if there's no lightning.
But it couldn't go over your wings!! Not and give you actual control over your trajectory.
That's just asking to crash!

that's fair, i guess
an umbrella would probably be more akin to a parachute in that case

but if you take into consideration wings also, and that you would be able to remain airborne with them, it may just counteract the drag of the umbrella

No it doesn't!!!
You couldn't even cover your whole body with the umbrella unless you were flying completely vertically which is NOT easy or possible I have TRIED!

and... surely vertically is just how you go up, no?

No umbrella can be THAT big!!!
And no, that's not what I mean, by flying vertically I mean going straight up from a standing position or converting to that once you're flying.
Maybe that can work with monsters that can hover or fly by some means that's not their wings but we still have to abide by physics.
