Are those things I have to lie about? I've spoken to you. I don't know where you are. It's no more and no less than that.

I guess on a technical sense that's true.

You said something before about not letting him know we were talking, though. That it might make him try and push a fight or something.

If he asks, he asks. You have to solve the problem that's in front of you to survive. It would have be better before if he didn't ask if we've spoken because I didn't want him to know I was interested in who you were just because he was. He would have paid more attention to you to try and control my feelings. It probably would have worked.

I don't know why he's interested. I don't know if it matters to me anymore. We're not the same even if you aren't "normal" either. The reason I wanted to talk to you this time was something I decided on my own. If that makes him mad at anyone, it should be me for doing something unexpected, and he won't hurt me. You don't have to worry, Miss Riley. If I'm right, you're not in any more or less danger than before.

I don't know how long they had been fighting before that, but she was already pretty mad when I got home. It's just...I was trying to make sure they wouldn't be angry again later by doing something without permission. It would have been better if we'd all listened to each other, right?

So that's why...it didn't make a lot of sense to me. Asking more then would have meant I wasn't listening to what she told me to do. That's why I never found out.

[ At ten years old, Riley comes home to tell her parents how much fun she had at Cairo's, to tell them how good she's doing in speech therapy, but she opens the door to barely contained screaming.

She stands there in shock because they never fought like that before. Not when her brother lived here. She tries to say something, but her mom snaps at her. "I need you to not be here, Riley."

[It takes Ray a while to get done turning the words over in her head.]
